The generator has a capacitor (4) in series with a resistor (2) in parallel with the terminals (1) of an ac source. A triac (5) is connected in series with the primary winding of the transformer across the capacitor. The control electrode (of the triac) is coupled via a diac (11) and a second resistor (10) to the junction between the first resistor (2) and capacitor (4). The primary (6) of the transformer is wound on an iron-powder core (7) and insulated from the hv secondary winding (8) embedded in the same encapsulant. A second capacitor (12) shunts the series combination of resistor (2) and first capacitor.
