The pressure control device in an automatic gearbox (10) for a motor vehicle together with a torque converter (11) forms a unit in which both are coupled to a combustion engine (12). For shifting the gears, the gearbox (10) contains friction elements, to which a pressure medium can be fed, the control pressure of which is adjustable to the respective load. The control pressure is generated by a control valve (13), in which a control slide (21) loaded by a control spring (38) is arranged, the spring biasing of which can be fixed by compression loaded pistons (41, 42, 43), which enable different lengths of travel (a, b, c) to be covered. These lengths of travel are binary stepped, resulting in a larger number of pressure stages for control of the friction elements. <IMAGE>
