Finely divided magnetite pigments with a narrow particle size spectrum are produced by the reduction of ferric oxide, the ferric oxide being one which has been obtained by the combustion of iron carbonyl, and the reduction of the ferric oxide being carried out under pressure in the presence of a liquid phase consisting of, or containing, a liquid aliphatic alcohol and/or aldehyde, at temperatures above the boiling point of the liquid phase, measured under normal conditions. The magnetite pigment is suitable for the production of magnetic inks for the ink-jet printing process.
