Process for reducing the chloride content of amphoteric surfactants including N-2-(dodecylaminoethyl)aminoethylglycine and N-2-(octylaminoethyl)aminoethylglycine, which comprises mixing the amphoteric surfactant with such an amount of sulphuric acid or nitric acid that a calculated pH of 0 to 1, preferably 0.15 to 0.5, is obtained, and separating the precipitated amphoteric surfactant from the chloride-containing solution.
