PURPOSE:To allow encoding of the voluntary character written in the drawing exactly and with smaller labor by narrowing down character candidates by giving how to read by the dialogue function and by increasing the degree of similarity between the character candidates and picture data. CONSTITUTION:Character reading is inputted by manual from a reading input part 15 which is constituted of the keyboard in accordance with the contents of highlight display of a display part 13. Based on the inputted reading, the code group of the kanji (chinese character) candidate group with the same sound is outputted from a kana fapanese syllabary/kanji conversion part 16. The character pattern group for the character candidate code group obtained here is obtained from a character pattern part 17. The part pattern and character pattern groups obtained here are compared by a collation part 18, and they are ranked in the ascending order of the highest degree of similarity. They are displayed on the display part 13 in the ascending order of the higher degree of similarity, and they are discriminated whether or not they are considered to be highlighted patterns. Based on the dialogical instruction, the character code, the coordinate value and the character size which correspond to the selected letter pattern are stored in a character code memory 19.
