The invention relates to an installation unit for straight fluorescent lamps which have a cap at one end and have an oval cap which is provided with contact pins, having an incandescent lamp cap and having a ballast which is connected thereto and consists of a coil former and an iron core. In order to be able to use such lamps in lights having normal incandescent bulb sockets with a small overall height and diameter, the incandescent lamp cap holds an insert as a socket for the cap of the fluorescent lamp, and the ballast has an annular core which surrounds the part of the cap which projects from the incandescent lamp cap approximately to the glass of the fluorescent lamp, concentrically with respect to the incandescent lamp cap, and is connected to the insert. <IMAGE>
