The roof rack is releasably attached with its supporting part 1 to adaptor pieces 3 by means of supporting struts 2, which adaptor pieces 3 can be attached to the roof of a motor vehicle by means of a fastening device 4. The fastening device 4 includes a tightening belt 6 which can be attached to the door and/or window apertures of the motor vehicle by means of claws 8 which are adapted to the shape of the roof. By means of a tightening device 7, the tightening belt can be fixed to the roof of the motor vehicle in such a way that the adaptor pieces connected to the tightening belt can be used to receive the supporting part of the roof rack. The adaptor pieces may have projections 14 which take the form of roof rail sections, to which hitherto conventional roof racks can be attached, or the adaptor pieces are adapted to specific designs of supporting struts. The tightening belt 6 may be divided and the ends may be provided with connecting elements which permit rapid adjustment, as only fine adjustment can be undertaken with the tightening device. A tightening force display device protects the vehicle roof against damage due to overtightening. <IMAGE>
