PURPOSE:To facilitate the attaching and adjusting of an encoder by electrically compensating the eccentricity of the encoder, by detecting the eccentric quantity of the encoder from the output of the photosensor in an encoder apparatus. CONSTITUTION:The output of a photosensor 3 is digitalized by an A/D converter circuit 7 through a peak hold circuit 6 and inputted to a controller 8. The controller 8 detects a max. value and a min. value from the output signal of the A/D converter circuit 7 to calculate a level variation width and the relation of a preliminarily calculated level variation width and the eccentric quantity of an encoder 1 is stored in ROM9. The output of the photosensor 3 receives wave form shaping by a comparator 10 and is counted by a counter 11 which, in turn, detects the rotary position (angle) of the encoder 1. The controller 8 calculates the correction quantity of the encoder 1 on the basis of the level variation width, the rotary position of the encoder 1 at the time of the detection of the max. value and the content of the counter 11.
