A hydraulic control device for controlling the adjustment of the two pairs of cone pulleys of a continuously variable cone pulley transmission connected to the output side of a drive engine for a vehicle, especially a passenger motor vehicle, has a control valve which has a control piston alternately admitting pressure medium to the actuating cylinders of the two pairs of cone pulleys. In order to achieve a favourable adjustment characteristic of the cone pulley transmission in such a way that high rates of adjustment are initially achieved in response to the vehicle driver's desire for greater load variation and low rates of adjustment are achieved in proximity to the design control speed of the engine, it is proposed that a shut-off valve (6), controllable as a function of the position of the control valve (4), be connected into the respective pressure admission lines (11, 12) leading to the actuating cylinders (1, 2) of the pairs of cone pulleys. In addition a bypass line (11b, 12b) bypassing the respective shut-off valve (6) and with a fixed restrictor (13) arranged in it for the delayed supply of pressure medium to the actuating cylinders (1, 2) is provided, which bypass lines become operative if the pressure admission lines (11a, 12a) leading directly to the actuating cylinders (1, 2) are shut off. <IMAGE>
