The invention relates to a letter envelope - which may be a window envelope - for the mechanical, automatic further processing of post. It is known that the further processing of post in, for example, post-office sorting rooms has to be undertaken manually in a cost-intensive manner for lack of suitable markings which can be efficiently read by machine and are completed or identified in advance, in a variable manner, by the sender. The invention avoids this disadvantage by establishing and applying a standardised and harmonised marking on the letter envelope which can also be transferred to other postal material, and which is particularly characterised in that, despite its standardisation and normalisation, it is variable within the range of cybernetic possibilities and can therefore be completed by the sender. The introduction of the letter envelope according to the invention creates substantial advantages in terms of efficiency and hence leads to dramatic cost reductions and to greatly improved postal services.
