Piperidine derivs. of formula (I) and their acid-addn. and quat. ammonium salts are new. In the formula, Ar is halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, NO2, halo-lower alkyl, tetrahydronaphtyl, phenyl, benzofuranyl, or isoquinolyl; R is substd. phenyl, thienyl or pyridyl; R1,R3,R4 are H or lower alkyl; R2 is H; n is 0 or 1; X; S = O or S; Y is -o- or direct bond, with the priviso that Y must be O when Ar is unsubstd. phenyl and R9 is H. (I) are prepd. by acylating II with RCOHal. I are psychotropic agents useful as antidepressants. They inhibit p-chloroamphetamine-inducted hyperactivity and uptake of 5-hydroxy triptamine, some having greater potency than imipramine and clomipramine.
