In a central buffer coupling of the Willison type, which can be rotated about its longitudinal axis, for rail vehicles which can be rotated about their longitudinal axis in the constellation of the train, in each case one of the coupled coupling heads (2) is equipped with a customary bolt transmission with bolt (4) which can be moved forwards and backwards and is held on the rail vehicle so as to be rotatable about the longitudinal axis (3). The other coupling head (1) is held on the rail vehicle so as to be non-rotatable about the longitudinal axis (3) and has at the end side a rigid profile (5) which corresponds to the profile of the first mentioned coupling head (2) with bolt (4) located in the coupling position. The profile (5) can also be constructed by means of insertion parts (10) which are to be attached to the coupling head (1) in a rigid but releasable or interchangeable fashion, the insertion parts (10) forming the profile section (8) in the region of the bolt which is otherwise present. The central buffer coupling ensures that in each case only one non-rotatable coupling head (1 and 2) can be coupled to a rotatably held coupling head, as a result of which an unimpeded rotational/tilting operation of the individual rail vehicles of the train constellation is ensured. <IMAGE>
