PURPOSE:To reduce dictionary capacity of a character recognition device and to improve the recognition rate and recognition speed by executing selection or rejection of the stroke and the integration and by extracting the final stroke. CONSTITUTION:A stroke selection integration part 7 compares the number of strokes which are extracted by a stroke extraction part 4 and the number of strokes which are extracted by a stroke extraction part 6 by separate directions. When the number of strokes coincides, strokes which are extracted by the stroke extraction part 4 are selected as the final strokes, features of these strokes are outputted to a retrieval part 103. When the number of strokes does not coincide, the stroke selection integration part 7 compares center coordinates of the stroke extracted by the stroke extraction part 4 and the stroke extracted by the stroke extraction part 6 by separate directions, and calculates the distance of the center coordinates.
