To avoid knitting faults, completely or partially broken yarns occurring in the yarn feed of knitting machines are detected by a light barrier which is arranged in the region of the knitting elements and which triggers an alarm and/or stops the machine. The signal-to-noise ratio of the light-barrier signal can be improved if the distance between the light beam and the knitting element is reduced. An extremely small distance which is always constant during operation is achieved if the monitoring light beam is moved in synchronism with the monitored knitting element.
