The invention relates to a method for producing a spark gap which is encapsulated in a gas-tight manner in a housing, as is known, for example, as an overvoltage suppressor or for voltage stabilisation and for generating the ignition voltage in welding apparatuses. In the past, spark gaps which are encapsulated in a gas-tight manner were initially evacuated and then filled with an inert gas, the type of inert gas, or inert gas mixture, being significant, inter alia, for the magnitude of the ignition voltage. In contrast, the invention proposes that the housing of the spark gap be filled with nitrogen, to be precise in such a manner that an arc is generated in the housing which is initially filled with air, by means of which arc the oxygen content of the air is burnt off. In this case, the sockets holding the electrodes can be bonded to the housing using an adhesive which cures within a predetermined time interval. The setting of the electrode separation which governs the respective ignition voltage is carried out during this time interval.
