In a davit (2), its jib (4) is provided with a supporting rail (11) which can be moved positively in the longitudinal direction and has a means (rope guide pulley 12) of deflecting the pulling means (5) in the direction of the ship's boat to be picked up. In this way, it is possible, even in ships which are provided with larger projecting obstacles at the stern, to pick up and hold ship's boats without the centre of gravity of the ship being changed by a large cantilever of the jib (4) when the ship is in motion. On the contrary, the ship's boat is suspended directly above the stern of the ship. <IMAGE>
