PURPOSE:A specific separation auxiliary is added to a reaction mixture containing saturated fatty acid alkyl ester which is obtained by a specific method and the mixture is stood to effect simple, easy and high-efficiency separation of the titled compound which is used as a component of synthetic detergent. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of saturated and unsaturated fatty acid lower alkyl esters is sulfonated with SO3, neutralized, and hydrolyzed into a mixture of saturated fatty acid lower alkyl ester with sulfonate salt of unsaturated fatty acid lower alkyl ester. Then, the mixture is combined with a separation auxiliary selected from 2-8C polyhydric alcohols, liquid alkylene glycol at room temperature and olefins of 6-30 carbon atoms such as ethylene glycol and stood to give the objective compound substantially free from saturated fatty acid esters and separation auxiliary.
