PURPOSE:To improve stimulable afterglow characteristics, by incorporating a small quantity of scandium in a bivalent europium-activated barium fluorohalide phosphor contg. a sodium halide. CONSTITUTION:Barium fluoride, a barium halide, a scandium compd., a sodium halide and a europium compd. are mixed together in such a proportion as to satisfy stoichiometrically the relationship of formula I (wherein X, X' are each Cl, Br, I; 0<a<=2; 0<x<=0.2; 10<-3=y<=10<-1>). The mixture is dried, finely divided, packed in a heat-resistant container such as a quartz boat and calcined in a weakly reducing atmosphere to obtain the desired bivalent europium-activated barium fluorohalide phosphor of formula II. A stimulable phosphor layer contg. the phosphor is provided on a support to obtain a radiation image converting panel giving an image of excellent quality.
