PURPOSE:To produce a highly crystalline poly-alpha-olefin economically, by using a catalyst comprising a specified supported active titanium component and, if necessary, an electron-donating compound. CONSTITUTION:An active titanium component is obtained by dissolving a magnesium halide (e.g., anhydrous magnesium chloride) in an at least equimolar amount of an active hydrogen compound (e.g., ethanol or heptylamine), adding an organic acid halide (e.g., formyl chloride) to the solution and adding a titanium compound (e.g., titanium tetrachloride) to formed precipitate. This active titanium component is mixed with an oragnoaluminum compound (e.g., triethylaluminum) and, if necessary, an electron-donating compound (e.g., methyl benzoate), and an alpha-olefin is polymerized by using the obtained catalyst.
