[Also in Division B5] A sealing device for sealing a cap C having a lining of a synthetic organic thermoplastic material to a container D having at least a rim R thereof made from a material interfusible with the material of said lining comprises an electrically heated platen 3, means for controlling the temperature of said platen to a temperature that reaches but does not exceed the softening temperature of the interfusible materials, a support plate 9 for said platen, said support plate being mounted on a device for axially moving said support plate and platen, and a thermal barrier means 12 between the support plate and the device. As described the platen 3 is heated by elements 4 controlled by a thermostat 6. The platen assembly has a heat shield 19 and is mounted on a sleeve 23 slidable relative to a shaft 25 reciprocated by a crank 34 from a wheel 36. A pin 30 prevents relative rotation between the shaft and sleeve, and when the shaft is driven downwards the resultant compression of a spring 29 forces the platen on to the cap. A layer 42 of polytetrafluorethylene is attached to the platen by a collar 43 to prevent caps sticking to it. |
