PURPOSE:To obtain fine zinc selenide powder of high purity with little variation in quality suitable for receptor elements, etc., by firing a mixed powder of Zn powder and Se powder in two stages. CONSTITUTION:A mixed powder of almost equimolar amounts of Zn powder and Se powder is primarily fired in an inert gas atmosphere at <=10 deg.C/hr heating rate until the temperature of a reaction zone reaches 400-500 deg.C to give a primarily fired powder, which is then pulverized, mixed, heated to 650-800 deg.C at <=20 deg.C/hr heating rate in an inert gas atmosphere and fired secondarily until there is no unreacted part. The resultant powder is then pulverized to give particles having <=10mum particle diameter in a ball mill, etc. Thus, the aimed zinc selenide powder with little deviation from stoichiometric ratio can be produced in high yield.
