PURPOSE:In the process where dialdehyde starch is swollen and treated with a polymeric substance to give a substance for medical purposes, the starch is dispersed in a buffer solution of a specific pH in a specific concentration and swollen at a specific temperature to carry out effective swelling treatment in a short time. CONSTITUTION:In the process where a dialdehyde starch for medical purposes is prepared by allowing starch to react with periodic acid or its salt, swelling the dialdehyde starch and treating the swollen product with a biocompatible polymeric substance, the dialdehyde starch is dispersed in a buffer solution of 2.5-5.5pH such as acetic-sodium acetate buffering system in a concentration of 5-40wt% and swollen at 40-80 deg.C. USE:Oral adsorbent with ability to adsorb toxic substances in living bodies of patients with renal failure, uremia, hepatic disfunction, etc.
