PURPOSE:To prevent the occurrence of hunting in time of suspension/resumption of operation, by suspending all the operation of a specified set of cylinders at a time when engine load comes smaller than the reference value, while getting this suspension of operation carried out after delaying a given period long via a delay device. CONSTITUTION:In case of both suction and exhaust valves 33 and 35 of #2 and #3 cylinders B and C in a four-cylinder engine, which are kept in a state of being closed by exciting each solenoid 51 of each valve block device 52 controlled by a control circuit 40 whereby operations of these cylinders B and C are designed so as to be suspendible, the control circuit 40 is constituted so as to excite each solenoid 51 and to suspend operations of these cylinders B and C when engine load to be detected by a throttle sensor 21 is judged to be smaller than the reference value. And, this suspension of operation is made so as to be done after a given period long via a delay device when suspension and resumption of operations are prevented from being repeated in a short period of time.
