PURPOSE:To produce economically alumina of high purity, by treating commercially available aluminum hydroxide with an ion exchange resin, and firing the resultant aluminum hydroxide. CONSTITUTION:Commercially available aluminum hydroxide is dissolved in dilute hydrochloric acid (1:1) under heating, and the resultant solution is evaporated to dryness. The dried solid is then dissolved in 0.1N hydrochloric acid, and ascorbic acid is added thereto. The resultant solution is then passed through a H type cation exchange resin, e.g. ''Dowex 50W-X8'', manufactured by Dow Chemical Co., to adsorb all the cations in the resin. Impurities other than Al are then eluted with dilute hydrochloric acid, and removed. Al is then eluted with 0.96N hydrochloric acid. The resultant eluate is passed through a Cl type ion exchange resin, e.g. ''Dowex 1X8'', to adsorb the residual Fe<3+> on the resin for removal. Dilute aqueous ammonia (1:1) is then added to the resultant eluate to precipitate Al(OH)3. The resultant precipitates are then fired at about 1,200- 1,800 deg.C to give the aimed alumina of high purity.
