PURPOSE:To obtain the titled flaky magnetic material, having a sheet-forming ability, and optimal for anistoropic magnetic materials, by the presence of polynuclear nickel hydroxide cations between layers of smectite. CONSTITUTION:A natural or synthetic smectite is charged into an aqueous solution of nickel metal ions, e.g. Ni(NO3)2, to carry out the ion exchange, or an alkaline solution is slowly added to carry out the ion exchange while hydrolyzing the smectite. Thus, polynuclear nickel hydroxide cations are present between layers of the smectite. Therefore, the titled magnetic material which is a flaky material having <= several mum size and about several tens of Angstrom thickness, capable of being highly dispersed by suspending in a solution to form a colloidal solution exhibiting a strong flow birefringence, and optimal for an anisotropic type magnetic material suitable to a memory element, etc. for electronic computers requiring high speed reversal is obtained.
