PURPOSE:To provide a hypnotic agent promoting the NREM sleep as well as REM sleep, and having excellent sleep promoting effect, by using uredine which is a kind of nucleosides, as an active component. CONSTITUTION:The objective hypnotic agent contains uridine as an active component. It has been found that uridine extracted from the brainstem of a sleep- inhibited rat is effective to promote the NREM sleep as well as REM sleep and is useful as a hypnotic. Uridine is distributed widely in the biological world in the form of a nucleoside, and can be produced by the hydrolysis of ribonucleic acid, or the dephosphatization of uridylic acid, etc. Uridine is administered usually at a dose of 1-100ng/kg in the form of injection, tablet, granule, etc.
