A device for sealing off the removable closing element of pressure vessels, in particular the cover of a quick-acting closure for pressure vessels, is described. In one of the parts to be sealed off there is provided an annular chamber which opens towards the sealing face of the other part to be sealed off. A flat gasket in the form of an annular washer which consists of a compound material based on graphite or asbestos fibres is driven into the annular chamber. A pressure medium is admitted to the annular chamber and has the effect of pressing the flat gasket against the sealing face of the other part. In this arrangement, the annular chamber may either be designed itself as a pressurised chamber, or there may be arranged in the chamber a tubular body to which the pressure medium is admitted and which presses as a result against the rear side of the flat gasket while undergoing elastic deformation. <IMAGE>
