PURPOSE:To obtain a titled die material which can be easily polished to specular surface, is hardly oxidizable and permits easy parting by sintering the carbide of W, Ti, Cr, Ta, Zr, V, Mo and Nb and the nitride of Ti, Ta, Zr and V with an Ni or Ni+Cr binder then subjecting the sintered material to a hot hydrostatic treatment. CONSTITUTION:Powder of Ni or Ni+Cr as a binder is thoroughly mixed at 5- 20wt% with 80-95wt% powder contg. >=1 kind among WC, TiC, Cr3C2, TaC, ZrC, VC, Mo2C, NbC, TiN, TaN, ZrN and VN. The mixture is subjected to calcination and sintering by an ordinary method in an inert gas and is then worked roughly to manufacture a die for a press lens. The die is subjected to a hot hydrostatic treatment at and under a prescribed temp. and pressure in gaseous Ar flow then to precision working so as to form the glass lens having prescribed dimensional accuracy and thereafter the die is lapped and polished by using a diamond paste, by which the optical specular surface is obtd.
