The invention relates to a four-stroke reciprocating piston engine, in which cylinder, piston, connecting rod and crankshaft are mounted so that they can pivot about an axis parallel to the crankshaft axis and the cylinder has a radial scavenging orifice, which runs along an adjoining fixed control valve body and in the process passes an intake slot, a closed compression zone, an ignition aperture, a closed expansion zone and an exhaust slot. In the engine it is thereby possible to dispense with the valve arrangement and the associated drive hitherto necessary. The reciprocating mass movement hitherto necessary is replaced by a uniform rotation of the cylinder-piston units along the control valve body.
