This invention relates to a reader of cards (1) with an identifying marking (2) and with a wall section (3) exhibiting an insertion slot (4), in which the card (1) is manually inserted up to a stop (41), comprising a read head (6) for checking and/or changing the identifying marking (2) on the card (1) in its inserted state, in which, when the card (1) is completely inserted, a part (5) thereof which is sufficiently large for holding it protrudes, the read head (6) being passable over the entire length of the identifying marking (2) in this check position. The read head (6) is elastically movable in all three spatial directions as a result of which it can easily be adjusted and is protected against the action of an external force. The read process can only be triggered by the completely inserted card (1), while it is immovably fixable in location and plane parallel to a guide wall (21) as a result of which an accurate progression of the read process is made possible. <IMAGE>
