PURPOSE:To produce a copolyamide excellent in transparency, toughness, and ethanol resistance, by polycondensing a dicarboxylic acid component comprising terephthalic and isophthalic acids with a diamine component based on 5-methyl- nonamethylenediamine. CONSTITUTION:A copolyamide is obtained by polycondensing by heating a dicarboxylic acid component comprising 70-90mol% terephthalic acid and 30- 10mol% isophthalic acid with a diamine component comprising 70-100mol% 5-methylnonamethylenediamine-(1,9) and 0-30mol% 2,4-dimethyloctanediamine- (1,8) and 2,4,6-trimethylheptanediamine-(1,7) and, optionally, a polymerization degree modifier, heat stabilizer, and light stabilizer at 250-300 deg.C and an elevated pressure in the presence of a small amount of water in an inert gas atmosphere, while the water formed is being removed from the system.
