The invention relates to a chemical process for the production of elemental potassium and subsequent reaction of the elemental potassium with other reactants, including various metal ores, such as those of magnesium, lead, copper, zinc, arsenic, antimony or silver, in order to liberate these metals in the elemental state from their naturally occurring forms. However, the elemental potassium can also be reacted with water in order to prepare potassium hydroxide and hydrogen, further elemental potassium being reacted with the potassium hydroxide in order to prepare more hydrogen and a thermally unstable potassium oxide which decomposes to form potassium and potassium peroxide or potassium superoxide. Said hydrogen and said potassium can also, if desired, be reacted with one another in order to prepare potassium hydride in order to store the hydrogen generated in this way, or the potassium hydride can be further reacted with carbon to prepare potassium acetylide, and further hydrogen may, if desired, be used to saturate the carbon bonds of these unsaturated compounds, the potassium or potassium hydride obtained from the process being used to catalyse the hydrogenation. |
