The invention is based on a tensioning device for an endless flexible transmission member, in particular for a V belt for driving auxiliary and accessory units on internal combustion engines, having a tensioning roller which is secured on a pivotably mounted rocker subjected to a tensioning moment by a spring in a tensioning element. In order to permit tensioning and retensioning of the transmission member in a simple manner and to achieve effective vibration damping, it is proposed to secure an annular rubber-elastic element of known torsional stiffness on and between two coaxial annular bodies in the tensioning element, one of which annular bodies is rigidly connected to the rocker while the second annular body can be rotated relative to the first annular body and fixed in this rotated position.
