<p>Rotary-type print wheels (30), components thereof, and mechanism for mounting (60, 100) the print wheels to a drive (90). As compared to all-plastic wheels, they have improved print characteristics and service life while still having a reduced moment of inertia. The wheels include a central hub (32) with teeth (52) which are engaged by teeth (74) on the drive. Alignment apparatus (50, 70) are provided. The spokes (34) are made of metal and can be formed with the hub (32) or separately. The tips (36) of the spokes are designed to facilitate attachment of a character element (38). The tips (36) are shaped to mate with an impact hammer (125). A die system (150) for forming tips (36) has removable inserts (154) which enables inexpensive manufacturing of special order print wheels having variable width tips. Damping structures (170, 180) restrain unwanted spoke motion during printing. Restraining structures (190) resist torsional bending of the spokes.</p> |
