Production of ferrite stainless steel of good workability comprises: (a) hot-rolling a ferrite stainless steel slab, with a total reduction of at least 80%, at a temp. of 1150-900≦̸C at the center of slab; and (b) cold-rolling the slab in a single step to a final thickness. Total reduction in (a) is at least 90%, with at least 35% reduction being performed in one or more passes. The temp. is pref. 1000-1100≦̸C. The steelcontains 0.08-0.5% solid Al, at least 30 (pref. at least 70) ppm N (as AlN), and 0.03-0.1% C. The workable thin sheets are produced in a simplified process, which requires no annealing of the hot rolled sheet, the hot rolling causing recrystallization and refining of the steel.
