PURPOSE:To improve the hardness and wear resistance on the surface of a cast iron member by subjecting the surface of the cast iron member to a degraphitizing treatment, rubbing a carbide forming element mixed with a binder to the surface, removing the binder and subjecting the surface to a melt chilling treatment thereby forming a chilled layer. CONSTITUTION:A cast metal 1 made of a cast iron exposed with graphite 2 on a surface 1a is subjected to a degraphitizing treatment to form many recessed holes 3 on the surface 1a. A liquid mixture composed of a carbide forming element 4 and a binder is rubbed into the holes 3 under about >=1.0kg/cm<2> and thereafter the binder is burned away. The surface 1a of such base metal 1 is subjected to a melt chilling treatment by using a laser beam, etc. to form a chilled layer 5. B, C, V, etc. are used for the carbide forming element powder 4 and the grain size thereof is regulated to about 200 mesh and the hardness to about >=250Hv. An epoxy resin, etc. are used for the binder which is composed at a ratio of about 80-95vol% the powder 4 and about 5-20vol% the binder. |
