PURPOSE:To produce the titled polymer excellent in mechanical properties, good in adhesion to glass, and useful as a resin for laminated sheets, by reacting a specified cyclopentenylphenol compound in the presence of an acidic catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A cyclopentenylphenol compound of formula I (wherein R is H, a halogen, nitro, a 1-5C alkyl, or an alkoxy, m is 1 or 2, n is 1-3, and H is bonded to at least one of the two positions o- and p- to the OH group) is reacted at 0-200 deg.C in the presence of 0.05-5wt% based on this compound, acidic catalyst (e.g., sulfuric acid) in a solvent (e.g., toluene) to obtain a cyclopentenylphenol polymer having repeating units of formula II (wherein the cyclopentane ring is bonded to the phenol nucleus in position o- or p- to its OH group, and the cyclopentane ring is bonded in positions 1 and 2 or 1 and 3). |
