For specific applications, for example in mining operations, for safety reasons conveyor belts of flame-retardant and self-extinguishing quality are specified. Since the textile inserts in such belts, in addition to having sufficient strength to produce the normal mechanical hook connections, must have a relatively high density, thorough impregnation, which is necessary for the intimate bonding, was hitherto not possible with the known rubber solutions because the textile inserts substantially separated the solvents in the manner of a filter before penetration as far as the fabric core. It was therefore possible to achieve useful results only by using solvent-free PVC plastisols. The invention overcomes the material limitation and permits the production of flame-retardant rubber conveyor belts with perfectly thoroughly impregnated heavy fabric inserts by using rubber paste solutions with additions of the binder known under the tradename "Chemosil".
