A slide unit 14 is fitted to one sidewall 13 of the supply hopper 11 of the apparatus, and its slider ram 16 can travel out towards the comminution unit 12. Bridges which hinder throughput are thereby overcome. Several blocking slides 18 are guided on the opposite sidewall 17 and can be pushed from outside into the inner space of the feed hopper 11. They form a barrier for the refuse situated above, so that a flap 23 in the sidewall 13 can then be opened. Refuse parts which cannot be processed by the comminution unit 12 are thereafter ejected to the side through this flap 23 by means of several ejector rods 22, these ejector rods being pushed in from outside through the gaps between the cutter discs on the feed side. The apparatus thus has a substantially higher throughput, and interruptions can be eliminated with a very small time penalty. <IMAGE>
