An electrode suitable for use in energy storage devices is described which is made of an assembly of an electrically conductive carbonaceous material having a Young's modulus of greater than 1,000,000 psi and preferably having conjugated polybenzenoid plate-like structures. The electrode material being dimensionally stable during repeated charge and discharge cycles.
