PURPOSE:To make a titled device immune from external noise, and also to operate it at a long distance by detecting a moving extent and a moving direction, modulating them to an optical signal, and transmitting and photodetecting it. CONSTITUTION:The optical communication of a coordinate indicating device 200 and a computer system 300 is executed by a photodetector 301 and a light emitting element 302, etc. provided on them, respectively. Also, the detecting part 220 of a moving extent and the moving direction is provided in the coordinate designating device 200, and an electric signal which has detected the moving extent and the moving direction of this device 200 is obtained. As a result, an optical signal 303 is photodetected by each photodetector 202-210, but output values of each lelement are different due to linearity, etc. of light, therefore, only the light emitting elements which from a pair with the photodetector up to the second rank by counting in order from the largest in quantity, among each output value is made to emit light. As for an optical signal 304, a data of the moving extent and the moving direction of said device 200 is modulated, and the computer system 300 photodtectes and demodulates it, and knows the moving extent and the moving direction. As a result, the system concerned 300 moves a cursor of a display part.
