PURPOSE:To produce ribavirin, by reacting 1,2,4-triazole-3-carboxamide(salt) with a ribose bonor under the enzymic action of Brevibacterium acetylicum under nonmultiplicative conditions of the microorganism. CONSTITUTION:1,2,4-Triazole-3-carboxamide (or a salt thereof) is reacted with a ribose donor in an aqueous medium under the action of a culture, microbial cells or treated material of the microbial cells of a microorganism belonging to Brevibacterium acetylicum as an enzymic source under nonmultiplicative conditions of the microorganism to give ribavirin. In the case of the reaction under high temperature conditions, contamination by miscellaneous germs scarcely occurs to suppress the decomposition reaction of the ribavirin.
