PURPOSE:To obtain a polymer capable of controlling easily polymerization in high yield without advancing gelatinization, by copolymerizing a diphenylethylene derivative with a divinylbenzene derivative in the presence of both a specific amine and a specified amide. CONSTITUTION:(A) a monomer (preferably p-, or m-divinylbenzene) shown by the formula I (R1 is H, 1-8C alkyl, or halogen) is copolymerized with (B) a monomer (preferably 1,1-diphenylethylene) shown by the formula II (R2 and R3 are R1) in the presence of both (C) an amine (preferably diisopropylamine, etc.) shown by the formula III (R4 and R5 are 1-8C alkyl or 6-18C aryl) and (D) an alkali metal amide prepared from the component C, to give a copolymer. The component D is preferably obtained by mixing the component C with an alkali metal alkylide such as n-butyllithium, etc.
