PURPOSE:To obtain inexpensively a macromonomer providing a copolymer having high graft ratio without causing coloring, by reacting a polymer containing a carboxyl group derived from mercaptopropionic acid at one end with a glycidyl group-containing monomer in the presence of a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:(A) A monomer (e.g., methyl methacrylate, etc.) is polymerized with 3-mercaptopropionic acid in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator, to give a polymer of one terminal carboxyl type containing a carboxyl group derived from mercaptopropionic acid at one end. Then, (B) this polymer is mixed and reacted with a glycidyl group-containing radically polymerizable monomer (e.g., glycidyl methacrylate, etc.) in the presence of tetrabutylammonium bromide, etc. as a catalyst, to give the desired macromonomer.
