PURPOSE:To obtain the titled prepolymer having excellent corrrosion resistance and solvent resistance, and suitable as a paint, by compounding a specific epoxy resin with a novolak phenolformaldehyde resin at a specific ratio, and reacting the components at a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:The objective prepolymer can be produced by compounding (A) an epoxy resin having >=2 epoxy groups with (B) a novolak phenolformaldehyde resin, and reacting the components at >180 deg.C. The amount of the phenolic hydroxyl group of the component B is 0.3-1.5 equivalent, preferably 0.3-0.9 equivalent per 1.0 equivalent of the epoxy group of the component A. EFFECT:The prepolymer can be cured at normal temperature to give a cured film having excellent corrosion resistance.
