The unit comprises a carrier for a rotatable reel and releasably arranged at the rear end of a tubular handle, and a threading needle secured to the forward end of the handle, the arrangement being such that the yarn is passed from the reel and through the handle. The needle is solid and has an eye near its pointed end of a size to permit smooth passage of the yarn which emerges from the handle through an opening to one side of the needle fixture. The needle may be a standard sewing machine needle.
