Smoothing iron with an internal electromagnet - to reduce operator fatigue from pressing the iron on to fabric supported on a metal backed board

A smoothing iron for manual use on laundry etc. is provided with an internal electromagnet. The magnet is sized to apply the appropriate pressure to the fabric supported on an ironing board which incorporates a suitable metallic substrate plate. Pref. when the iron is lifted clear of the fabric, the electromagnet is de-energised, either automatically or by a manual switch provided on the handle.
