PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound useful as an intermediate for drugs by a short process easily in high yield, by using easily obtainable cyanopyridine as a raw material, subjecting it to catalytic hydrogen reduction in the presence of a specific hydrogenating catalyst in an acidic aqueous solution. CONSTITUTION:2- or 4-Cyanopyridine obtained easily by ammoxydation of alpha- or gamma-picoline is subjected to catalytic hydrogen reduction in the presence of a hydrogenating catalyst (excluding hydrogenating catalyst of noble metal, especially preferably Raney-nickel catalyst, amount of it is 5-30wt% based on cyanopyridine) in an acidic aqueous solution at <=50 deg.C, preferably at 0-40 deg.C to give 2- or 4-pyridinemethanol. |
