PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having a good running characteristic without generating flawing and sticking by forming a magnetic recording medium consisting of a ferromagnetic metallic film on a thin metallic film layer which is provided with microcracks and is formed on an org. resin base plate. CONSTITUTION:A thin metallic film 2 consisting of aluminum oxide, etc. is formed by sputtering on a plastic base plate 1 consisting of polyethylene terephthalate, etc. While the base plate 1a is conveyed from an unwinding shaft to a take-up shaft by revolving rollers 5, 6 of a heat treating device 3, prescribed tension is applied to the plate 1a in the longitudinal direction thereof by a heating roller 7 and tension is applied thereto in the transverse direction by many nip rollers 8 to form many microcracks (0.1-1mum groove width and 5-50mum length) in the longitudinal direction of the base plate. A ferromagnetic thin film 10 is provided on the film 2 to form a magnetic tape 11. The magnetic recording medium having a good running characteristic is thus obtd. without generating flawing and sticking.
