PURPOSE:To produce a polycondensate useful as a water-soluble cutting lubricant, by the polycondensation of a polyethylene glycol having a specific structure with an aliphatic dibasic acid. CONSTITUTION:The objective polycondensation product is obtained by charging specific amounts of a polyethylene glycol of formula (x is integer of 4-10; y is 3-45; n is 1-3) (preferably having a molecular weight of 200-600) and an aliphatic dibasic acid (e.g. adipic acid) in a proper vessel, and heating preferably at about 200-220 deg.C in nitrogen atmosphere in the presence of a conventional dehydrative condensation reaction catalyst.
